Studentship Offer at UCL, UK

Exploitation of imagery in an ad hoc network environment UCL in conjunction with Thales Optronic Division.
This is a 4-year studentship, leading to the award of an Engineering Doctorate (EngD) Degree, which offers the opportunity to conduct research within an industrial context. An EPSRC funded studentship is available to UK citizens and permanent residents. Applicants must fulfill EPSRC eligibility criteria and the normal academic requirements for admission to study in the Department. We regret that no funds are available for overseas students.

The post will be based at the site of the Thales Optronic Division, Bury St Edmunds, Suffolk. It is offered under the Communications Engineering Doctorate Programme, which is jointly run by the E&EE Dept. and the Computer Science Dept. at UCL.
An opportunity is available to conduct research in computer vision, with application to image data from airborne platforms and ground based sensors for military purposes. This programme will exploit new attention based technology for the location and identification of interesting or anomalous objects. Particular emphasis will be placed upon the use of the open standard JPEG 2000 encoding for region of interest enhancement and economic use of variable bandwidth constraints whilst remaining compatible with delay and disruption tolerance, as required for typical military networks. The study will explore the storage of additional metadata to allow rapid interactive access to relevant image regions in newly acquired data. This will include the extraction of 3D geo-location information from 2D images.
This work will require the development of knowledge of image processing techniques and aspects of human vision. It will provide an excellent opportunity to work in an exciting field with innovative teams located both in academia and industry.
The successful candidate will have a 1st or 2.1 undergraduate degree, or a masters degree, in Computer Science, Engineering, or other relevant discipline. Previous experience in computer vision is desirable but not essential.
This studentship will pay a tax-free stipend of approximately £18,000 per year, and fees will also be paid.
